Chairman, United Taxicab Workers, which affords a front row seat to a baldly corrupt industry that, with the active assistance of the city Board of Supervisors and Taxi Commission, continually schemes against drivers' ability to make even the barest of livings. No health plan, no pension, no job protection. Open extortion by bosses. De facto indentured servitude: if you're sick and can't work, you're still liable for that day's gate, or car rental, currently running $96.50-to-$103.50 a day. Yet, a more unique and privileged job there isn't. For one who loves people and puzzles (shortest, quickest routes in a Rubik's Cube city), has information to exchange, can drive well and enjoys it, performs poorly in kiss-ass office environs, and thrives on the entrepreneurial chase of a buck, the job is perfect. In fact, it's usually the only job he can hold.
